The Technology Jump

If it isn’t broken, don't fix it, right? To upgrade or not to upgrade? Why would you?

Technology moves so very fast, you had better keep up or risk getting left behind and that will cost you. I put it down to the 'Technology Jump'. This is an unlikely example but imagine if you were still running the old coaxial token ring ethernet? Hey, it works. What if you NEEDED to upgrade? Say some software or hardware is required to continue enabling the business. Well that is going to cost you.... Switches, cabling, NICs, a whole new network infrastructure. All because you were trying to save dollars by putting off the inevitable.

I'm not saying, stay on the very edge of technology, but try to keep up. Most companies combat this by scheduled replacement policies. This only works if you actually action it. Admittedly this should be the responsibility of the IT department. So why fight them on it? It is amusing to watch the business think they know anything about IT and what it actually does for the business. A necessary evil or an active business enabler. What are they doing for you?

Enough of my rants... for now...
